Connect, Extend, Challenge Soldering
Connect: The video connected to what I already knew about soldering as I knew it includes hard materials including a circuit board and wires. But I also knew that you would to do drill a little bit more and more of use the tools on the screen. Which was a Pink and Green set of wires, A large tool holder with a mirror and pilers, 3 scraping tools, Om meter, Clear glasses, A large and small set of pliers, A gold pen-like object and an orange drill-like object. Seeing this, made soldering look much more complicated and confused me a little bit. That confused me as previously before starting stem, I hadn’t heard much about soldering and I wasn’t too sure what I was expecting. Watching this video, made soldering seem that much easier.
Extend: Something the extended my knowledge from watching this video is how you can redo your action and get rid of a mistake that you made with a pleated wire. I was very interested in this because I feel like personally, I might make a few mistakes as I have never really soldered before. Knowing this makes me feel more comfortable soldering. Something else that extended my knowledge on soldering is how much heat plays a part in this action. This extended my knowledge because I previously never really knew much about soldering and I found this video quite helpful for me to know so then I know what I am doing when start doing my own soldering. This video also extended my knowledge about soldering as I thought that it would much more complicated as the lady depicted soldering in the video as being easy, which makes me feel much more confident. Something that extended my learning from this video is that solder is actually a chemical that allows the metal to melt. I found this very interesting as I never knew the term “soldering” came from the name of the chemical. I found this really interesting how a chemical reaction can stick 2 things together!
Challenge:
Something questions that I have developed regarding this topic are;
- How long will it take to solder?
- Once the 2 pieces of metal are stuck together what will we do? What can you make?
- What is a capperlar reaction?
I ask these questions because I am interested to know how long it will take to solder so if I were to try this at home without supervision I will know how to plan my time. I also ask this question so I know what to do before class so I have more detailed prior knowledge which can lead to less amount of mistakes on the day. I would like to know the second question, once the 2 metals are stuck together what do they do, what can the melted metal make. I ask this question as I am interested to know if I want to use this technique of soldering what can I make out of it. I also ask this question because if I were to redo this project, I would do a technology project and I am just wondering if chose to do soldering what could I make out of it. I ask the last question, what is a capplear reaction because, on the video, the lady mentioned it when she was burning the braided wire and added some solder to it and mentioned that it made a capperlar reaction. Ask this question because I didn’t know what it was and what else it is caused by.
