Today in Stem (A lesson we have at school that combines Engineering, Science, Maths and Technology work- Computing)
As you know, for previous post we are doing coding and so far I have been using scratch and Code.org (I have photos down below of my progress through out this lesson)
On Code.org this lesson I started fiddling around with my game that is about a cat trying to kill A dog and A penguin (pleasant, right?)
After worked through that game it got a little bit bored and wasn’t challenging myself a bit and decided to start “Unity” which is a stimulation kind of program.
As I tried to find it on google (which I did) I realised IT TOOK TIME TO LOAD……
As I am quite impatient, I decided I have always tried scratch, so I started to play around with it, I learnt how to created a character.
(Photos down below show my progress)
After I created my character, I had no lesson time left and will continue to work on it.
The things that helped me along the road of confusion and stress were various expert coders in my “STEM” classroom and also applying my previous knowledge on how to code and the basics to more complex types and forms of code.
The insights I had while doing this task were how to draw various characters on scratch- (As you can see I created my self down below.)
I also learnt using Code. org how to actually move more than 1 character at the same time.
Before: Before this experience, I felt pretty confident on “Code.Org” and didn’t care if it was way too easy because scratch was way to hard and confusing.
During: During this experience, as I started playing around with my Code.Org game and found it way to easy and not challenging myself at all.
Then I decided to use scratch for a while and created characters and various backgrounds along the way.
After: After this experience have a brief idea of scratch and how to make backgrounds and to challenge myself the CORRECT amount.
During this process I didn’t encounter many large road blocks only, trying to over complicate my game on code.org but failed because, the format was way to easy and I needed something more complicated to work with.
I over came that by switching format to scratch so it’s more my level and taking it more in moderation instead of doing things and not knowing what I am doing.
The first photograph is the actual code on “Code.Org” to get the cat to kill the dog and penguin (There is more code but it would take several images to show you what I did). As I explained in previous portions of this post I created a few characters using scratch and the middle one (Me) and I also created a background aswell.
The last one is one of the levels in my Code.org game, just before we start killing the Penguin.
All of these photos represent my coding journey because even it’s the easiest game in the world (My cat killing penguin game) or just creating a character using a difficult format (Scratch) I am still proud.
What I would do differently is maybe start using scratch and not make a game on Code.org because I knew it was easy and not have a fixed mindset.
